Modem hijacking
Wednesday June 09, 2004
Recently we have been reported that some of our customers are getting the unexpected long distance charges on their phone bill.
These charges may be related to "modem hijacking". This can happen if the user is asked to do the following,
- download the unknown file, viewer or dialer into the computer
- accept certain Terms and Conditions
The file, viewer or dialer then runs automatically to the background of the system or behind the pop-up ads, and it will try to use the dialup modem to call the phone numbers in the foreign countries.
To prevent from "modem hijacking", the user please makes sure of the following,
- do not download any unknown files or answer any unexpected requests from the websites
- read the Terms and Conditions carefully
- update the anti-virus software and scan the whole system regularly
- remove any dialup connections from your computer that you do not familiar with
The problem can also affect the high-speed users if they have the dial-up connection in place. So, please disconnect the modem when not in use.
